This tactical shooter is here to bridge the gap between fast-paced arcade shooters and hardcore milsim games. Down Range features a wide variety of uniform options to mix and match, as well as a handful of different weapons to lightly customize to your liking. If vehicles are more your thing, we have a fair number of options to drive or fly. With 3 game modes and numerous parameters to adjust, there is hopefully something for everyone to enjoy. If you get tired of the 2 premade scenarios, head over to Game Master Thor and start your scenario creation journey. Build your operation, save it, and load it later with a friend.
SSE COMBAT
The SSE Combat game mode will have you moving through smaller areas of operations to collect intel within a specific time frame. Complete as many zones as you can and then fight your way to extraction! Vehicles will be available to move from zone to zone, but be careful not to let the enemies destroy them, as in this game mode you cannot get more. Upon successful extraction, command will grade you and let you know if you have done well enough to unlock your next operation.
ENGAGE AND ANNEX
The Engage and Annex game mode is a larger-scale war simulation with a handful of zones for players to operate in. Board a chopper and head out to the active AO. Friendly forces will join the fight to help you complete the objectives within the zone. Command will assign three tasks per zone, and a new zone will be activated randomly upon completion of the previous zone. Gain rank to spawn vehicles and show your time dedicated to the fight at hand.
GAME MASTER THOR
The Game Master Thor is a scenario creator. Spawn in a variety of vehicles, BLUFOR and OPFOR AI, static assets, and blueprints found in the base game. Change the time of day or weather type, alongside editing individual AI stances, fire modes, or pathing. Let your imagination run wild! Turn a barren desert into an overgrown oasis and have enemies defend hackable computers. Or maybe fortify an area with friendlies and defend against the game master's fury. Your fight, your rules.
WEAPONS
Weapon customization in our game is relatively simple; choose between a handful of options and modify your weapon using different attachments. Each weapon has recoil, aim speed, and damage values that can be adjusted with the parts you choose. The gun customization is simple by design because we want it to be easy for anyone to set up a weapon, and shooting is a mix between arcade and realism.
VEHICLES
Vehicles in this game are more on the arcade side; hop in and drive. If your vehicle has a second seat for a gunner, you can have a buddy jump in and command the turret. All vehicles have a semi-real simulation going on in the form of damage and fuel. Maintain the fuel gauge so you don't run out of gas, and keep an eye on how many parts of the vehicle have been damaged. Vehicles will go into a soft death state after too much damage, but they can be fixed using a toolkit.
MEDICAL
The medical system is another area where we wanted to bridge the gap between realism and arcade. Players will have blood levels to manage as well as different injury types and ways to deal with them. We did our best to simplify this system for players who are new to this genre while also keeping it interactive for milsim veterans. Operators and AI both have an unconscious state, which will allow players living their best medic life their time to shine. Toss your buddy on your shoulder and carry them to safety so you can provide the care they need. Stop the bleeding and get their health back over the threshold to help them regain consciousness and get back in the fight.
SINGLE AND MULTIPLAYER
Single player and multiplayer in this game are one and the same. Go lone wolf with no option for backup or open a server to receive help from friends and other operators.
FACTIONS
This is not a heavily story-driven game, but factions will play a role in bringing the worlds and locations to life. Friendly factions include a future variant of the US Army, alongside the main private military group you belong to. Enemy factions include a fictional Russian private military and a fictional terror organization. A civilian faction is also available, but mainly for the game master mode.
ITEMS
There are many items within the game, but how you handle the weight of your inventory will determine your play style. If you're interested in being an engineer, then feel free to grab the toolkit. But if you're the type to enjoy being a medic, then go ahead and grab extra tourniquets, bandages, morphine, and blood bags to aid players and fellow AI in the combat zone.
COMMUNICATION
Find your voice with easy-to-use local voice chat and player radios. Simple radios will aid in your squad's communication across distances, but if you are out of range, you can also send a text via your ATAK.
AI
Want to have your own squad of friendlies follow you around and engage your enemies? Walk up to a battle-ready BLUFOR and have them join your squad. Options to have the AI hold fire, move to a location, follow you, etc. are available to players who want to command a squad in single or multiplayer. Like with most video game AI, they have a never-ending need for polish. But with the in-game parameters players will be able to adapt the AI more to their liking.
These are some of the main pillars of our game, with plenty more surprises and features still to find within. This has been a new adventure for our team of two to take on a multiplayer project of this scale. It has been a wild ride, and we are very excited to finally be sharing our game with all of you. We hope you enjoy our experiment!
