You are Hatori, a masked imperial agent sent to the lawless asteroid city Kleopatra to capture a dangerous psychic fugitive. What begins as a straightforward mission unravels into something far more personal. As you shoot and slash your way through violent biker gangs, you enlist the help of a bounty hunter who seems to know you from a past life...
Kleopatra explores the concept of a person's identity being a matter of perspective, the distance between who someone is and how we perceive them. It also grapples with how grief and trauma are handled differently by different people, how the loss of a loved one can inspire not only hatred and revenge, but also change and redemption.
Most importantly, it is about the effect that time has on us, mentally and physically, both visible and invisible, rational and inexplicable...
With combat inspired by arcade rail shooters and action RPGs, clear enemy waves before HP or TIME runs out. Shoot enemies to build your hit chance, land critical hits, and chain SLASH, SNIPE, and SLICE abilities into devastating combos. Slow down enemy attacks with ASTRAL SHIFT or DODGE at the last moment to avoid damage. Different enemy types require different strategies to break through their defenses.
Between waves, draft randomized mods in a roguelite selection. Equip up to three at a time. Each mod alters your stats, but the real power is in how they chain together. Mods trigger off each other in loops, turning careful selections into automatic combo engines.
Various aspects of combat (like hit chance, damage, defense, etc.) are dependent on stats which can be upgraded by earning credits through bounties (repeatable combat stages).
Earn high scores through escalating bounties to progress further through the story campaign. Complete the story to unlock NEW GAME PLUS and an INFINITE BOUNTY endgame mode: an endless run where you can cash out or keep pushing until your HP or TIME hits zero.
Push your total score higher to unlock a challenging optional boss only available after completing the game.
An early demo of this game shipped with AI-generated art. Choosing to replace all of it with commissioned human artwork delayed launch by a full year... and it was worth it. Every image, word, and sound in the final game is human-made.
Kleopatra took half a decade to build the hard way: real-time combat engineered inside the Ren'Py visual novel engine, two artists (one visual, one audio) given singular direction toward a coherent retro sci-fi anime experience, and a story drawn from the creator's own journey through the loss of a loved one, including what it took to come out the other side.
