The soundtrack blends sound samples from vinyls and cassette tapes unearthed in souks across the globe, celebrating Arabic and Indian music of the 1950s. These fragments are combined with newly recorded performances of real instruments to create a sound collage—a fusion of Eastern musical traditions and experimental noise music. This evolving soundscape dynamically responds to the city’s neighborhoods, the number of monkeys, the player’s actions, and unfolding events, generating a random reconfiguration of audio fragments. The result: a wholly unique composition with every playthrough.
This hallucinatory, surreal atmosphere merges the primal attitude of nature with the concrete dimension of a newly imagined capital.
Each monkey has its own dedicated musical track, composed of percussive elements and melodic lines, with up to twenty variations. Their collective presence constructs a full piece of music. At the start of each session, monkey tracks are randomly distributed but remain consistent throughout that session.
When a monkey strays from the player, its volume shifts accordingly. If it rehydrates in a puddle or basin, its music fades out. Should all the monkeys rehydrate simultaneously, their music vanishes entirely—replaced by the epiphanic music of water.
Sound effects—crafted from vinyl glitches and crackles—punctuate the action and interlace with the broader score, like the stutter or slip of a turntable’s needle, creating oscillations that engage in a dialogue with the original composition.
