What is "Da Siu Yan" (Beating the Villain)?

Da Siu Yan is a century-old folk ritual practiced under the Goose Neck Bridge in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. In 2014, it was inscribed onto the Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage list. A shamaness (shen po) uses an old shoe to beat a yellow paper representing the villain, accompanied by steps such as offering to the White Tiger, burning the paper, and making blessings – symbolizing "driving away the villain and welcoming the nobleman".

"Beat the Villain" is an interactive application that recreates the authentic Da Siu Yan ritual of Hong Kong.
