The ancient well is calling, and the waters beneath the earth are beginning to surge.
Cracked soil and unnatural moisture spread through the village at the same time. Every omen points toward an old and forbidden legend: the Drought Demon is about to awaken.
To keep the disturbances from spreading, you must take charge of the abandoned ritual grounds surrounding the well. Clear away burnt incense, rebuild the shrine, welcome returning worshippers, and gather the resources needed to investigate each new call from below.
Wardwell is an idle management game inspired by Chinese folklore and supernatural tales. There is no high-pressure real-time combat. Instead, you will manage the shrine, plan your resources, and unlock new paths of progression as ominous events unfold around the ancient well.
The Well Calls, and the Omens Draw Near
The ancient well will not remain silent.
As time passes, supernatural events progress through charging, warning, manifestation, and resolution stages. Water surging beneath the earth, gathering spiritual energy, and signs of the Drought Demon’s return gradually appear through environmental changes and event sequences.
Wandering spirits, jiangshi, and water ghosts may also emerge alongside the well’s disturbances, leaving behind strange tales and unusual materials. Every event is both an omen and an opportunity to learn more about the well, unlock new developments, and reveal what lies ahead.
These events are not conventional real-time battles. Your accumulated resources, unlocked content, and the development of the shrine determine how prepared you are for the intensifying disturbances.
Build an Economy from Burnt Incense
Burnt incense continuously accumulates around the shrine. At first, every piece must be cleared by hand. As your operation develops, you can unlock brooms for batch clearing and Clean Wind Talismans that automatically remove burnt incense over time.
Restoring the small incense burner increases the amount produced during each cycle while also providing a steady source of incense income. Clear the remains, gather incense, invest in upgrades, and unlock new ways to make the cycle increasingly efficient.
Restore the Abandoned Shrine
Spend incense to restore the small incense burner, offering stone, wish rack, and merit box. Each facility has its own method of production and can affect both worshipper offerings and the shrine’s overall income.
What begins as slow manual collection can gradually develop into a growing system of batch processing, continuous production, and automation.
How you invest your limited incense determines whether you pursue immediate gains or save resources for future events and progression nodes.
Welcome Visiting Worshippers
Worshippers travel along the village roads to reach the shrine, stopping at different facilities before making their offerings. Each visitor has their own fortune, which can influence both the journey and the result of the offering.
Improve facilities and traditions to increase the value of their visits. Observe the flow of worshippers and plan your development so that their offerings become a stable part of the shrine’s economy.
Their arrival is also a sign that the villagers still believe the restored shrine can withstand the omens gathering around the well.
Place Wards to Strengthen Production
Paper talismans, bronze bells, and well stones are part of the shrine’s management system. Once unlocked, they can be placed at designated locations to improve incense generation, facility output, or other resources.
Each ward offers a different production benefit and requires its own investment. Choosing which wards to prioritize allows you to shape the shrine’s economy around the resources you need most.
Wards do not participate in real-time combat or directly intercept supernatural entities. Their purpose is to strengthen your resource cycle and create more room for long-term development.
Choose Your Path through an Interconnected Progression Tree
Facilities, traditions, wards, and strange tales form a single interconnected progression tree.
Focus on increasing incense production and burnt-incense clearing, improve the offerings made by worshippers, unlock new production wards, or invest in tales connected to the disturbances of the well.
Unusual materials obtained from supernatural events—including jiangshi fangs, broken corpse bells, and black glutinous rice—can unlock further nodes. Management provides the resources needed to investigate the omens, while each new event brings additional materials, stories, and paths of progression.
